Reflection

For this project I chose to focus on Lucas Gardens because it’s a park nearby where I live and sometimes I go and sit there to clear my mind and get outside. This brief made me reflect and think of the times I spent at a park near my house in Hawaii. As a result, I created an interactive installation for my final piece. The viewer is invited to come lay on a blanket I’ve set on the floor along with lots of fake plants and a heat lamp to warm them up. When they look up they’ll see a projection of clouds on the ceiling. My installation recreates the experience of laying in the grass and cloud watching on a warm day, something I miss being able to do. I used a sheet to hang up and create a wall to build a sense of atmosphere. I also made a fake tree out of two empty milk cartons, paint, pipe cleaner, and paper. I took inspiration from the digital and technology aspects of the exhibition Lux at the 180 strand. There were immersive experiences involving projectors and tvs which gave me the idea to incorporate projection. I also drew inspiration from Heather Phillipson, who has created some of the most iconic installation work in London. I appreciate the way she challenges deeper subjects while always finding a way to involve her audience which makes them contemplate the meaning of the piece.
